Why heat pumps suit the North Shore

The climate here is close to ideal for a heat pump. Our winters are mild and wet rather than deeply cold, and a modern cold-climate unit holds useful efficiency well below the temperatures North Vancouver actually sees in a typical year. The handful of genuinely cold nights are handled by backup heat, which is exactly what it's there for.

The other half of the argument has become harder to ignore. Summers on the North Shore aren't what they were, and a heat pump is an air conditioner running in reverse — one system, both jobs. Households replacing an aging furnace are increasingly deciding that paying once for heating and cooling makes more sense than paying separately for each.

Ducted or ductless?

If your home already has ductwork in reasonable condition, a ducted heat pump is usually the cleaner answer. It uses the existing distribution, keeps the equipment out of sight, and heats and cools the whole house from one thermostat. The catch is that ducts sized for a furnace aren't always right for a heat pump, which moves a larger volume of air at a lower temperature. Undersized returns are the most common problem we find, and they're worth correcting rather than living with.

Ductless mini-splits make sense for homes with no ducting — hydronic or baseboard heating, older houses, additions and suites. Each indoor head serves its own zone, which suits a house where the family room needs cooling and the bedrooms don't. The trade-off is visible wall units and the reality that a head only conditions the space it can see. Doors closed, the room down the hall stays as it was.

Many North Shore homes end up with a hybrid: a ducted system for the main floor and a mini-split for a converted attic, basement suite or addition the ducting never properly reached.

Sizing is where installs go wrong

The single most consequential decision is capacity, and it's the one most often guessed at. An oversized heat pump satisfies the thermostat quickly, shuts off, and starts again — cycling that costs efficiency, wears the equipment, and does a poor job of removing humidity in summer. Undersize it and you lean on expensive backup heat all winter.

We do a CSA F280 heat load calculation: room-by-room measurements accounting for insulation, window area and orientation, ceiling heights and air leakage. It takes longer than a quote based on square footage or on whatever size the old furnace was. It's also the difference between a system that performs the way the brochure says and one that doesn't.

Check the electrical panel early

A heat pump is a significant electrical load, and plenty of North Shore homes still run on a 100-amp service that's already close to full. If the panel needs upgrading, that's a real cost and a separate permit, and it's far better discovered during the site visit than on installation day.

What the installation involves

A straightforward changeover is typically one to three days on site. We remove the old equipment and dispose of it, set the outdoor unit on a pad or brackets with attention to drainage and to how much noise ends up under a neighbour's window, run the refrigerant lines and condensate, make the electrical connections, modify ductwork where the airflow calls for it, and commission the system — checking refrigerant charge, airflow and controls under real operating conditions.

Permits are pulled where required and we meet the inspector. You get the manuals, the warranty registration and a walkthrough of the controls before we leave.

Rebates

Heat pump rebates in British Columbia run through CleanBC Better Homes together with a utility program, depending on whether your home is on BC Hydro or FortisBC. Amounts and eligibility rules change from year to year, and there are conditions that catch people out — most notably that the contractor generally has to be registered before you sign the quote, and that a pre-installation energy assessment usually has to happen before work starts.

Do heat pumps work in cold weather?
Yes. Modern cold-climate heat pumps produce useful heat well below the temperatures North Vancouver sees in a typical winter, and a backup heat source covers the coldest nights. The mild, wet winters on the North Shore are close to ideal operating conditions for this equipment.
Should I get a ducted heat pump or a ductless mini-split?
If your home has ductwork in reasonable condition, ducted is usually cleaner — whole-house heating and cooling from one thermostat with no visible indoor units. Ductless suits homes with no ducting, such as those with hydronic or baseboard heating, and works well for additions and suites. Many homes end up with a combination.
